A while back, we talked a little bit about how some essential oils can help you sleep better at night and how others can help you feel more energized in the morning. If you’re still having trouble getting some shut-eye, then consider diffusing the following oils in your bedroom.
Essential oils for sleep
1. Chamomile
For centuries, chamomile has been used as a natural remedy for skin infections and wounds. It is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is also teeming with antioxidants.
However, research has shown that chamomile also helps reduce signs of stress, nervous tension, and anxiety. This is mainly because of its abundance in apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to receptors in your brain and helps induce sleep.

3. Cedarwood
For bouts of restlessness and insomnia, try a few drops of cedarwood in your diffuser or in your bath. Cedarwood helps support hormonal balance, by activating the pineal gland (where melatonin—the body’s natural sleep hormone is produced).
Unlike chamomile and lavender, which are very floral in fragrance, cedarwood has a very earthy, rustic, and warm scent. It’s also a natural deodorizer, and fights off unwanted odors so that your room retains its refreshing atmosphere from dusk till dawn.
4. Ylang-ylang
This tropical, star-shaped flower gives off a rich, relaxing scent. It helps soothe the sympathetic nervous system, and slowly eases your body from its flight-and-fight mode to rest-and-digest. Studies show that ylang ylang also lowers the blood pressure and slows down the heart rate.
Apart from its sleep properties, ylang ylang also helps promote skin and hair health. A drop or two of ylang ylang oil in your night cream, moisturizer, or body lotion, can further enhance your complexion, improve skin elasticity, and lock in hydration in your moisture barrier. You can also mix it into a homemade hair mask, for a lustrous mane. Talk about beauty sleep!
5. Frankincense
Also regarded as the king of essential oils, frankincense is known for its plethora of benefits. It helps promote better digestion, strengthen the immune system, and support respiratory health. However, it is also known to help ease anxiety and improve your sleep.
With its slightly spicy, but deeply earthy aroma, frankincense has grounding properties promotes clarity of mind. In other words, it helps soften and slow down the thoughts and worries before bedtime.
It may even be a helpful aid for mindfulness meditation. Before meditation, combine frankincense with a carrier oil, then try rubbing it against your temples and the back of your neck. Incorporate this routine before you sleep.
