Sleep can be improved or worsened by actions that we take throughout the day. What we eat, how much light we expose ourselves to, and even how much exercise we get all play a role. Snacks are an important part of the sleep cycle, and some are a lot better for you than others. Here are some snacks that can help you get a good night’s sleep.
Complex Carbs
To have something that really fills you up and allows you to sleep without the constant frustration of hunger, you need complex carbs. White breads and pastas just don’t do it for you, but things like popcorn, oatmeal, and the like can make a big difference in how you sleep.
Peanuts, Cashews, Etc.
Various nuts have a lot of fats that are particularly heart-healthy. It is a good idea to try this snack out as something that can help you get the rest that you require. Almonds and walnuts, in particular, have a lot of melatonin in them, and this compound is great for helping someone to get to sleep.
Bedtime Tea
It has “bedtime” right in the name, so how could you go wrong? Tea companies are capitalizing on the urge of many to get chemicals into their bodies that help them get more and better rest. A number of these companies have released teas designed to help a person get to rest. There are a lot of varieties on the market now, so make sure to check out each one to see which ones have the compounds that you are looking for.
Warm Milk
This perhaps seems like an odd choice to add as a snack to have before getting some rest, but it really does work. Tryptophan and melatonin are both compounds that are found in milk, and warming it up helps with the absorption of these compounds into your bloodstream. The warmth of the milk is also easier on your stomach, and that can be a great way to try to get in something that won’t interrupt your sleep.
Fruits
We should all be getting more fruits in our diet anyway, and they are a particularly great choice when the objective is to get the best sleep possible. Specific fruits to focus in on are cherries, bananas, pineapple, and oranges. You will get more vitamins into your diet, and you will find many of the same compounds that we have referenced here repeatedly in these fruits as well.
There are a lot of choices that you can make about your bedtime snack, so make sure you choose wisely. Too many people are eating too much and allowing themselves to deal with indigestion and other issues that keep them tossing and turning. It is easily avoidable, and you should make sure to do so.
Your sleep schedule is all about getting things set up just right. The more you get it in line, the better and more productive you will feel. Make the easy changes such as what kind of snacks you eat before bed and you have already made progress.
