I don’t really like Tom Cruise. His scientology rants really freak me out. However, you cannot knock the man’s success. He has amazing power in Hollywood and is able to influence many people with his charisma and authority. This post will look at some of Tom’s views on work and becoming successful.
Keeping good company
It is ancient wisdom with a modern twist. The company you keep is very important.
“When I work, I work very hard. So I look to work with people who have that level of dedication. And I depend on that from everyone. From the director to my crews that I work with.” - Tom Cruise
It is very important to keep good company. If you hang around with people who have different aims and goals to yourself you will soon find that your own resolve has been weakened. I once heard a buddhist master say:
“If you put a rose in a sack of fish soon the rose will smell like fish.”
This is very true. Keep company that encourages you and makes you feel empowered. Do not keep “haters” around you. No body needs friends who bring each other down because they are so insecure about themselves.
Don’t work for money
Here is another quote from Tom that has a very important message behind it.
“I’ve never done work for money ever.” - Tom Cruise
If we work for money we will not get much out of our jobs. Success should not be measured by the car you drive or the amount of money you make. It should be measured by how happy you are. Sure, money is important. But do not make it so important that it becomes your very reason for work. Why? Because if you don’t get it you have nothing.
Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself
Quite often people settle into their own little way of life. They think they know how they are going to become successful and they plug away at that without considering other options.
“I always look for a challenge and something that’s different.” - Tom Cruise
It is a good idea to look for new challenges. These new challenges don’t have to be new ways to success but they can be viewed as little offshoots. For example, I have a friend who is a very good kung fu master. Although he is an expert of his own style he still goes to many other martial arts classes because he feels learning other styles will help him better his own style. New challenges in life can boost our progress to success.
