I don’t wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work
- Pearl S. Buck

So today is Friday and no doubt everyone will be heading to the pub for some end of week drinks. How do you bring yourself to enjoy these moments when you’d rather escape home?

Realize that you can sleep later

Sometimes the pressure from friends to go out just simply cannot be ignored. Sometimes it is bad for your career to miss a pub session. So for those times when you are completely exhausted and just want to curl up in bed you should realize that you can always sleep later. If it is Friday night you can sleep in on Saturday and take it easy on Sunday.

Realize the opportunity

Work can be a horrible place. However, if you love the people you work with it always seems like a happy place. Even if the work itself is boring or difficult you can enjoy yourself because the people are nice to be around. Going out to the pub is a good way to get to know people and find some reason to enjoy their company. See it as a rare opportunity to make a new friend.

Realize that you don’t have to stay long

It is much better to make a short 30 minute apperance than it is not to go at all. Quite often you can go for less than an hour, make some good jokes, have one drink and leave and no body wonders why you are leaving. Sometimes when people drag you out somewhere you don’t want to go we have the tendancy to think that the drinking will last forever. It won’t.

Don’t cling to one person

Back in the old days I used to find someone I liked and clinged to that person. It was nice and good while it lasted but inevitably that person would leave to talk to someone else or go home themselves. Then I felt kind of lonely. Make sure you go around and talk to lots of different people. Introduce yourself. Butt in. Have a good time with everyone.

Invite your other mates

If you are going to the local pub there is nothing wrong with sending out a group sms to all your real friends and telling them to come have a drink and a game of pool. Of course it is a bad idea to hang out with them and ignore the work people completely, but it can be a good idea to introduce your friends. This works especially well if your friends are talkers because you can sit back and let them do the work.

Get busy

Pubs usually have a pool table. I try to get on the pool table as soon as I can. Why? Because when I really don’t want to be out I can concentrate on having a good game of pool. The same goes for pinball, arcade games or even a dinner meal you might sit down and order.

Be generous

Occasionally you have to be generous with your time. Not everything is about you. Sometimes you just have to do things you don’t want to do. As much as it sucks it is a good opportunity to develop patience and tolerance.
